Kepler’s First Law (Law of Ellipses) :
Planets move in elliptical orbits with the Sun at one focus of the ellipse.
Kepler’s Second Law (Law of Equal Areas):
An imaginary line drawn from a planet to the Sun sweeps out equal areas in equal intervals of time. This means that a planet travels faster when it’s closer to the Sun and slower when it’s farther away.
Kepler’s Third Law (Law of Harmonies):
The square of the period of revolution of a planet around the Sun is directly proportional to the cube of the semi-major axis of its orbit.
Kepler’s laws provided observational rules for the motion of planets. These laws didn’t explain why planets move the way they do, but they accurately described their motion. Newton, using his laws of motion and the newly formulated calculus, was able to derive these laws from a single fundamental principle: the law of universal gravitation.
